Bristol Brunel takes audiences to another galaxy

It was an amazing production that was truly out of this world, transporting audiences to another galaxy as Bristol Brunel Academy staged Return to the Forbidden Planet.

Featuring a vibrant score of 1950s and 1960s rock and roll classics, the show captivated audiences with its energy, humour, and striking sci-fi storytelling.

This sci-fi classic follows Captain Tempest (played by Leia Prior in Year 10) and his crew, who crash land on the mysterious planet D’Illyria, which is inhabited by the mad scientist Doctor Prospero, his daughter Miranda and their robot, Ariel. Prospero, who was banished into hyperspace years earlier, has created a dangerous ‘X Factor’ mind-enhancement formula, and a monstrous creature begins attacking the hero’s ship.

The show is known for using iambic pentameter dialogue and featuring classic 1950s/60s rock ‘n’ roll hits such as Great Balls of Fire and Good Vibrations.

Rehearsals began in September, with students dedicating months of hard work to bring the production to life.

This sci-fi extravaganza showcased the talents of more than 40 students from Years 7-10. From acting and singing to technical support and stage management, the production was a true whole-school effort.

Joanne Ayre, Curriculum Leader of Drama, said: “It has been incredible to see our students grow in confidence, creativity, and teamwork throughout this process.

“Students were highly engaged in shaping the creative direction of the show, contributing their own choreography and ideas, which fostered a strong sense of ownership and pride.

“The production was directed by Peter Edwards, while the band – led by Andrew Salida and featuring exceptionally talented student musicians – delivered an outstanding performance. It was truly a collaborative team effort from the performing arts department.”
